A Thanksgiving 2014 post…but not really?

It doesn’t feel like much has happened since my last entry, or at least, much that I feel like writing about.

My ‘go to’ topic: A Holiday

Even when there is not a lot going on it’s usually fairly easy to come up with something to say around a holiday. But Thanksgiving has come and gone and I failed to even blog about that. It was a nice, quite time but not much different than any other meal time with our family. Thanksgiving Day we had lunch at Mom’s. It was just us, immediate family. Then on Saturday we had a Thanksgiving Dinner at Kris’s Mom’s. Again, just immediate family. The main difference between a normal family meal and Thanksgiving was the abundance of food and having plenty left overs to eat for days afterward.

I don’t want to sound like i’m down playing the specialness of the occasion because it was a very blessed time. But as I’ve stated many times in other writings, In terms of spending time with family I try to live everyday as if it’s a holiday. We are very fortunate that our immediate family is around and part of our every day lives. We don’t have to travel or wait for holidays to spend time with them so we do it as often as possible. It’s the holidays that involved extended family that tend to be the more exciting affairs.

Stop what you’re doing and scratch my back!

I have to stop for a minute to pet Bella. She’s a cream and white tabby with a mask and mantle coat. She has jumped up in the chair between me and my laptop demanding some attention. She loves to knead on my stomach. When she wants me to pet her she will put the tip of her cold, wet nose on the closest body part of mine she can find and push her head forward to brush her face along side it. She does this until I acknowledge her. If I don’t respond she tries the same thing with the edge of my computer screen.

Ok a few minutes of that is enough so back to the blog.

Connecting the creative dots

Way back when (Aug 2012), I mentioned that I was starting to write stories. Then in my Memorial Day post this year I briefly mentioned working on historic references for a romantic story idea I have.

I also mentioned a Dystopian story I would write first to get the ball rolling. This past June I went to the Little Rock Comic Con and was inspired to possibly take the Dystopian story in a graphic novel direction. So I started educating myself about how to write comics.

Somewhere along the way I discovered a competition based reality show on Youtube called “Strip Search”. The creators decscribed it as “America’s Next Top Cartoonist”. That discovery put me back in touch with a creative part of me that I had long forgotten. Back in ’89 and ’90 I wrote/drew an editoral cartoon for my college student newspaper.

So having a background in cartooning, I thought that would be something good to start creating again on a daily basis. It would serve as an exercise to get me up to speed for writing comics. Then, when I  wrote the comics they would serve as storyboards for a graphic novel. So far, I have started several scripts and i’m excited about how it’s progressing. I don’t have an interest in drawing the final version of the comics/graphic novel but I do plan on doing drawings for the drafts.

As far as the cartoons i’m doing as exercises, I’ll start posting some of the funnier, ‘slice of life’ stuff. Like this one of our cat, T.C. (also called T-Zilla, Fatty Smhoo, Tuxedo or Buddy at times)

Our tuxedo tabby likes to sit around in the litter box. At first I found this strange but then I wondered if he had learned this behavior from his humans who sometimes just sit around in their litter box?

And the beat goes on?

Oddly enough, I began writing stories because I had slowed way down on writing music. In my Memorial Day post I also had mentioned a project I was doing of converting old cassette tapes of my music into digital files. The massive amount of music that was on those cassettes really made me see how productive I could be if I wanted to.

I have quite a bit of original music that I’ll sit around and play on guitar for my own entertainment but have never recorded. And the truely sad part is that it’s now easier than ever to make great sounding recordings. So i’m going to try and tap into the creative juices that the story writing has flowing again and record new music.

Even though I haven’t recorded new music in a long, long time I’ve still tinkered with recording technology along the way. I’m hoping my recently purchase of the intro version of Abelton Live (recording software) will help me get more serious about it.

I know it sounds like I’m all over the place but I just let the process happen. Whatever I feel like working on when I wake up in the morning is what gets the attention at that moment.  I know that goes against all conventional wisdom in regards to being productive but it’s what works for me. I might not be systematic and get one piece completed then move onto the next. Hopefully, my process is more like a dog having puppies. A bunch comes out all at once. And who doesn’t love puppies?
