It’s the most wonderful time of the year…
As a kid I remember watching all the Christmas Specials on T.V. There was Charlie Brown, Rudolf, Frosty and many more. There was no cable networks, DVD’s or Netflix. There was just one airing each year and if you missed it you had to wait an entire year to see it again. If you missed them you felt sad but if you saw them it gave you, for lack of a better description, a special feeling.
One of the common themes with all these specials was snow. So, in my mind, if it snowed on Christmas then it made it an extra special Christmas. In 2012, as the song says, we got the White Christmas we were dreaming about.
In 2013, It was beginning to look a lot like Christmas several weeks in advance as we got a snow/ice storm in mid-December.
Winter Wonder err Wasteland!

I have this old storage shed on the lake house property. It is weathered and worn but to me it has a charm to it. It has character. It has stood the test of time and ended up rough and rugged like any “Man” thing should be.
I’m sure the neighbors find the old thing to be an eye soar. And ultimately, the plan has always been to tear it down at some point and build a garage in it’s place. But until that time, it was still serving it’s purpose allowing us to store stuff in it.
But the snow/ice storm of December 2013 was the old storage shed’s last stand.

It fought gallantly but in the end, the weary, battered structure was no match for the brutality the first storm of winter unleashed. The cold, wet precipitation slowly accumulated until it reached the point it was able to fold and crumble the old shed like it was mere paper.
Leaving in it’s wake, a definite eye soar.
Although the snow slowed things down for a few days the weather got back to normal. The hustle and bustle picked right back up and brought Christmas with it way too soon. With 2 weeks left to Christmas, we finally got a tree up. We weren’t able to shop for gifts until the weekend before Christmas. Both of these things use to always happen right after Thanksgiving making the Christmas season seem like it was a month long celebration. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day was spent celebrating and then it was over.
On one hand it makes me kind of sad.
But on the other, as an adult, I feel like I try to live my life like everyday is Christmas.
As a kid I remember when I asked for a toy I wanted really bad the answer was something like “maybe Santa will bring you that for Christmas”. Now, when I want something really bad, I get it and tell myself it’s my Christmas gift to myself no matter what time of year it is. As a kid I loved the big meals at the holidays. Now, I eat Christmas worthy meals all year long. As a kid I always enjoyed seeing extended family. Now, I keep in contact as much as I want.
Although the “special” feeling may not last as long as it use to I will always try to make Christmas time a little more special than the rest of year.
