This story begins: “A short time ago…in a galaxy not so far away…SMART PHONES!” Cue the orchestral march sounding music.
About 2 1/2 years ago I got my first smart phone. I’m not the type that has to have all the latest gadgets so I was casually late to the party.
My more trendier friends had already been walking around with their iPhone doing all kinds of things with their little apps.
But I’ve never bought into the whole ‘I’m more of a free thinker than you cause I use Apple’ mentality. Especially since everything has to be managed by iTunes. To me, accepting the restrictions enforced by iTunes is being way more of a conformist than using a PC or Microsoft products. Then somebody always pipes up, “Not me, my phone is jail broke” like they are raging against the machine. To which, I’m rolling my eyes.
But enough of my self-righteousness and back to the story.
I didn’t want to have to jailbreak my device just to be free to manage my content so when the Android OS came out that’s when I finally started to consider buying a smart phone.
And when Motorola introduced the R2D2 Droid phone, my weakness had been preyed upon. Just slap a Star Wars logo on it and i’ll buy about anything.

And for 2 years that trusty little droid served me well.

But as time passed smart phones kept evolving and when my contract was up this past January I upgraded to a LG Spectrum 2. It should’ve been named C3P0. It was BIG maybe even a touch bulky. It was flashy! It had a huge screen with a sharp image. It was everything I wanted in a smart phone.
I talked about it in past tense because it is now gone.
At some point last week amidst the house remodeling and helping my GF move out of her apartment my Spectrum 2 disappeared. I suppose it is remotely possible it is packed away in a box somewhere and will resurface one day. But my gut tells me it’s gone. I’m thinking I sat it somewhere on my truck and forgot to pick it back up before I drove off. If so, i’m hoping it got run over and smashed into a million pieces.
If someone has found it they are not doing the honorable thing and returning it. It would not be hard to figure out who it belongs to from the contact info saved in it.
Regardless, after a few days I accepted the reality of the situation. C3P0 was gone. Since i’m a border line cheapskate I had not purchased replacement insurance. It was going to cost way too many republic credits to get a new one and I had no Watto to place a sure bet with.
Since i’m a border line hoarder I still had my R2 unit. So I took the trusty droid into the Verizon store and had him reactivated.
And just like the character in the movies he was back in service delivering in the crunch. Tough, dependable, spunky lil’ droid.
