Happy Memorial Day 2014

I think Memorial Day is becoming one of my favorite holidays.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Thanksgiving/Christmas/New Years holidays. But unfortunately, they have become such a cash cow for big biz that all the things that make that time of year so special get overran by all the bad things.

Though they try, the sentiment behind Memorial Day apparently isn’t as easy to pimp out. With the heart of the matter being about honoring those who gave their life for our freedom, I think most of us around here feel the best way to do that is taking an extended weekend and simply enjoying that freedom. For me, that’s usually a cookout where buying food is the only expense and is something I would do whether it was a holiday or not. So, no added expenses plus some rest and relaxation is my kind of holiday.

And I can’t over emphasis the R&R. By the time Memorial Day gets here my neurons are pretty well shot and I need to veg for a few days. I tend to multitask which I use to believe was a code word for being ambitious. I later found out it was actually a dirty word meaning not able to focus.

Basically, it goes something like this. In Jan. I get super motivated thinking I need to do something like work on my websites. I have a website for my retail biz. I have a blog which you are reading now. I have an auto biography website which I work on but haven’t published. I have a website about my collectibles i’m developing. I’m developing one strictly about my music.

By the time I get around to working on my music site I realize I have a ton of old material on audio cassettes that I need to create audio files for. So I start an archiving project. To date I’ve created audio files for 30 cassettes that have at least 30 mins of material on each side, A and B, that need to be edited down into individual songs. After working with all the old music I feel like I need to record some new music so I start that as a new project.

When working on new music I think it sure would be cool to have a Prince guitar (Schecter Cloud) to play on these recordings. I mentioned wanting one a few blogs ago. Since it doesn’t appear that one will ever surface, at least at the price i’d like to pay, I got the itch to build another one. I built one somewhat similar to it in the 80’s but I think I could do much better. I’m pretty sure I can take an existing Stratocaster body and carve it down to the cloud design. So I’ve got to do some practicing with my dremel tool before I start on this project.

The auto biography website is two fold. The main purpose obviously is to be an archive of my life. I’ve got tons of photos I need to scan for it and I can’t scan just the ones of me. To connect the dots I need to scan my immediate family but that leads to needing to scan photos of extended family and the next thing I know I’ve got a full blown genealogical photo archive project on my hands.

The second purpose of my biography site is for historical reference for a fictional romance novel I have in the works. Yep, I’ve got a love story that I think will become a best seller. And obviously, I think it would make a great movie. But to do it right it would have to have an origin movie, followed up by 2 seasons of a television series, then pay off with a final movie. So now I need to write books, outline 2 movies and 2 seasons worth of tv shows.

I know there is no way I would ever be given the control I would need to do that project the way i’d like so I’ve begun writing a dystopian fiction story that has the potential to become a franchise of books, graphic novels and movies. With this project I would be fine giving up creative control in hopes that it’s success would help me establish a track record I could use to get the romantic project done.

When I want to get my mind off all that I work on the collectibles website. It’s main purpose is to help me inventory my action figure collection and serve as a virtual museum for it. From about 1995 to 2000 I was a hard core collector. Although I haven’t been an active collector for about 15 years, working on the website has got me thinking it might be fun to start a toy store dedicated strictly to action figures. That way I could collect again but have a business that pays for it. These days it’s so easy to start up a store online that I’ve been doing some test runs on eBay getting all the in’s and out’s down.

So I’ve got all that swirling around in my head in addition to the responsibilities of my full time job which is operating our family business. And last but certainly not least, the lake house I bought last summer as a rehab project.

So do you blame me for wanting to just stop all the wheels from spinning for a few day by the Memorial Day weekend comes along? But more importantly, I don’t blame myself for it. Memorial Day marks a stopping point. A place to rest for a minute. A moment to reset before heading into summer. That’s why it’s quickly becoming one of my favorite holidays.
